| Have I been penalized..?Most websites rely on search engines as their primary source of traffic. Many site owners have invested considerable time and money building search engine rankings and simply want to compete for ranking in a fair online market place. But a fair online market place currently doesn’t exist, because some leading search engines can erroneously change your site’s rankings. These search engines use processes to impose ranking penalties. Sometimes the penalties are fair – but in some cases they are imposed by mistake, causing many honest websites to disappear from search results virtually overnight. What’s worse, is that there is no easy or transparent way for website owners to find out why this has happened. When search engines hold positions of such power, we argue this should come with an equal duty to be transparent when it comes to penalties. We are campaigning for search providers to confirm to concerned website owners whether a penalty has been imposed and provide an explanation why. It is only fair to allow the penalised site to put things right as quickly as possible so that it can regain its rankings, or appeal a penalty applied in error.
